We helped develop a hydraulic test stand for an aircraft like the world had never seen, and decades later the US Navy still chooses Hydraulics International for the V-22.
Overview
Decades ago, the US Navy came to Hydraulics International to develop a hydraulic test stand for the innovative V-22 Osprey multi-mission, tiltrotor military aircraft. But with such an innovative platform, the rulebook hadn’t even been written yet.
We worked closely with the Navy to develop the specification, built the initial units from scratch part-by-part, and then sent them for verification.
Now, more than 20 years later, we’re the US Navy’s preferred source for hydraulic test stands for their entire fleet of V-22 Ospreys.
the challenge
When the V-22 Osprey was being developed, the world had never seen anything like it. It could take off vertically like a helicopter. Fly like a fixed-wing airplane and even fold its propellers to fit in the compact space aboard a naval vessel.
There was no blueprint or specification for the hydraulic testing stand for such an innovative aircraft.
Our Solution
We worked closely with the US Navy to develop the specification for the V-22 Osprey’s hydraulic test stand. After developing the specification, it was time to develop the actual units. We built them, piece by piece, in our Chatsworth, CA facility, and then sent each piece and finally each complete unit to the Navy for testing and validation.
The Result
Today, decades later, the US Navy owns the specification for the V-22 Osprey’s hydraulic test stand. They could choose any vendor to manufacture it for them. However, they pick Hydraulics International just about every time, because after decades of collaboration, they trust our expertise to deliver a critical component for one of the most advanced, and unique aircraft ever built.
